International Bowling News Nepomuceno uses home advantage to take the qualifying lead

Midtown Bowl in Manila, Philippines (May 7-13, 2008)

Paeng Nepomuceno, Philippines, powered his way into the lead on day three qualifying in the 6th Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge at Paeng's Midtown Bowl in Manila, Philippines. The 4-time World Cup champion, who has won 118 international titles in his illustrious career, has registered high 3-game series of 760 and 756 to lead the field with 1516 pinfall total and an average of 252.67.

Malaysian Zulmazran Zulkifli, who finished second in the World Ranking Masters last week, used back-to-back 279 games for a 793 series, the highest of the tournament thus far.   International Bowling News WTM champion Caminsky forced to postpone the upcoming Durban Cup

05/10/08

The Durban Cup has built up a wonderful tradition over the years for South African bowlers. Therefore, it was a difficult decision for bowling center proprietor and South Africa No. 1 bowler, Guy Caminsky, to announce that the Durban Cup 2008, due for the May 17-18, is postponed.

"We have had an unfortunate incident at Superbowling Gateway," said Caminsky, who won the 11th World Tenpin Masters in England and the 30,000 Dollar first prize three weeks ago.

"A customer threw a ball into our ceiling and knocked off the sprinkler head for the fire sprinkler system. This caused the emergency fire sprinklers to activate and deposit 2000 liters of water onto the lanes." The damage has been massive and in Caminsky's opinion the center is not tournament ready.

"I understand that this will disappoint many bowlers but I can assure that it is in the best interest of the tournament. I feel the lane condition will be so bad that by hosting the event in spite of the water damage will do more harm to the tournament.

"The good news is that we will be able to resurface the lanes and provide a world class pattern on the lanes this year. I expect the tournament to be held in the latter part of 2008. I will keep you posted as to the new dates as soon as I have them."

International Bowling News Two firsts for Paeng Nepomuceno

05/09/08

4-time World Cup Champion and USBC International Ambassador for Bowling Paeng Nepomuceno just concluded the first USBC Silver Coaching Accreditation Seminar in Manila, Philippines, the first time a silver coaching seminar has been conducted outside the United States.

Another first for Paeng was that he conducted three seminars - Level One, Bronze Level and Silver Level - one after the other in a span of six days.

The seminars were held in conjunction with the sixth Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge at the host venue, Paeng's Midtown Bowl, from May 2 to 7, 2008. Level One was conducted on May 2, Bronze on May 3 and 4, and Silver on May 5-7.

Coaches who successfully completed the Silver Coaching Accreditation Seminar were David Wong Han Keong and Chew Helmi B. Adam, Singapore-based coaches, Australian Eric Jang who flew in from Sydney.

Jang was the former coach of Jeanette Baker, who is a two-time World Cup champion (1982, 83) and the sole player in the history of this event who successfully defended the title, and also former PBWA champion Cara Honeychurch.

The two other Silver coaches that were certified are former Philippine National Team Member and 2003 Trios World Champion, Cecilia Yap, and Yap Seok Kim, a Singaporean coach based in the Philippines.

Paeng, the most busiest coach in Asia, is scheduled to hold a Level One and Bronze Level Coaching Accreditation Seminar in Jakarta, Indonesia from July 4 to 6 before he will conduct his second Silver Coaching Accreditation Seminar at the Olympic Fun Bowl in Hong Kong, and July 21 to 23.

Nepomuceno's training is part of the USBC effort to create an international coach training program and bolster the strength of federations within bowling's world governing body, the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ). All this is in line with the continued efforts of USBC to secure a spot for the sport of bowling in the Olympics.

Nepomuceno continues to actively compete. He recently returned from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he finished third in the Kingdom Open. He greatly enjoys his new role of teacher and is happy to contribute to the USBC's efforts for bowling to take its rightful place in the Olympics.

PBA Team Shootout PBA announces Summer Series details

18 stars selected for team competition at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Ill.
05/08/08

The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and Six Flags announced today details of the PBA Team Shootout Hosted by Six Flags Great America, the second consecutive summer the two have teamed up for a special event featuring some of the top stars of the Denny's PBA Tour.

A total of 18 bowlers will compete in the made-for-TV team event which will air throughout the summer on ESPN.

The PBA Team Shootout Hosted by Six Flags, also sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), will take place June 5-8 at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Ill. The 18 players include the 16 champions from the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour along with one additional player designated by the PBA, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, and another designated by major sponsor USBC, World Bowler of the Year Jason Belmonte from Australia. Belmonte just recently became a PBA member.

The 18 bowlers will be divided into three teams with players being selected by three "captains" – PBA Hall of Famers Mark Roth, Carmen Salvino and Brian Voss. The three captains will draft the players during a ceremony on Thursday, June 5, following the official practice session.

"We are excited about teaming with Six Flags and the USBC to once again showcase the best bowlers in the world for this special summer event," PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer said. "We feel we have an exciting and talented field of athletes, mixing the top young stars with the legends of today and yesterday. An international flavor should also add a level of excitement for the fans and players."

Starting Friday, June 6, the three teams will compete in round robin, Baker style match play with a total of 12 matches taking place. Each team will bowl four matches against the other two teams, with each match taking place on a different oil pattern. The only one of the five PBA oil patterns which will not be used during round robin play is the Cheetah pattern as that pattern will be used in the championship round.

With six players on a team, one bowler will sit out each game for the five-man Baker style matches. Team captains will designate which five players will compete during the matches.

After the 12 matches are complete, the top two teams based on match play record will advance to the championship round on Saturday, June 7. The championship round will consist of one singles match, one doubles match and one Baker-style match, with the captains choosing the participants for each match.

The singles and doubles matches will each be worth one point while the Baker match will be worth two points. Should the teams tie, one player from each team – who will be determined prior to the start of the competition by the team captains – will participate in a one-ball sudden death roll-off. The winning team will split $100,000.

One special feature that will carry over from last year's summer event is the "Endless 10th Frame," which will only be used in the round robin match play portion of the event. Should a bowler strike with his fill ball in the 10th frame, his team will continue to bowl until they do not strike again, with each additional strike adding 10 pins to the team's total score.

Additionally, a total of $1,000 in bonus money is up for grabs in each round robin match with $100 on the line in each frame. In every frame, the bowlers on opposite teams will compete against each other for the bonus money. The bowler with the most successful frame will receive $100 for their team. Should the bowlers tie in a given frame that money will carry over to the next frame. If a tie takes place in the 10th frame, bonus money goes to the team that won the match. Endless 10th frames do not factor into the individual frame bonus money.

International Bowling News Defying doctors' orders pays off for Wendy

By Ajitpal Singh

Republished courtesy of New Straits Times - Persekutuan, Malaysia (May 7, 2008)

Wendy Chai, for the last five years, has been defying doctors' advice to quit bowling but her defiance not to do so paid off when she won the World Ranking Masters in Jakarta on Monday to be the new women's World No 1.

Wendy Chai gets a hug from her mother Susan upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Not many know that the 31-year-old Wendy has been suffering from a serious cartilage injury to her left knee, sustained at the 2003 World Championships in Kuala Lumpur.

Since then she has been defying doctors' orders to go under the knife to repair her knee and to quit bowling.

"There were times when I did consider quitting. However, I'm glad I did not as my decision to carry on has paid off at the World Ranking Masters," said Wendy on arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Jakarta, yesterday.

"Being World No 1 is every sportsperson's dream and I'm glad I have achieved it in my career as a bowler."

She added: "I don't know how long I will carry on playing but as long as my knee does not give me too much trouble, I will continue to represent the country."

Before winning in Jakarta, Wendy was experiencing a barren run mainly due to the death of father, Kenny last November.

She even opted to stay out of the Korat Sea Games squad as she could not cope with her bereavement.

Wendy, who won the singles gold medal at last year's World Championships in the United States (Note: Wendy won bronze in singles and gold in team at the 2007 Women's World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico), said she will need to train harder from now on as expectations will be higher as a World No 1 bowler.

"People will always be keeping tabs on my performance and I need to establish myself further in competitions. Also, my rivals will always be keeping a watchful eye on me," she said.

Wendy's next assignment will be the Singapore Open on May 22-31.

Meanwhile, Monday's World Ranking Masters title means that Malaysian bowlers have won all of the majors in the sport except for the AMF World Cup.

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) should now concentrate on preparing its bowlers to win the AMF event to complete its collection of majors.

This year's AMF World Cup will be held in Mexico on Nov 7-15.

PBA 50th Anniversary PBA announces plans for 50th Anniversary Celebration

2008-09 season is the PBA Tour's 50th

The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) announced today plans for a 50th Anniversary celebration as the upcoming 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour will mark the 50th season in the organization's history.

To kick off the celebration, the PBA will announce the "50 Greatest Players in PBA History." A committee will select 50 bowlers from an original list of 100 and will then rank them from 1-50. Prior to the announcement of the top 50, fans will have the opportunity to rank their top 15 bowlers on the PBA's official website, www.pba.com, starting in June.

A countdown to the top 50 bowlers will take place throughout the summer and the start of the 2008-09 season on PBA.com. Should a fan's top 15 bowlers match the committee's top 15 in exact order, they will be entered into a drawing to win a special prize, which will be announced at a later date.

The PBA will also designate one stop during the 2008-09 season for a gala celebration in which members of the 50 Greatest Bowlers in PBA History will be honored. In addition, a PBA Hall of Fame induction will take place at the gala with bowlers being inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame for the first time since 2005.

The PBA's online video service, Xtra Frame, will feature special interviews and video clips of the 50 Greatest Bowlers throughout the season.

Announcements will be made throughout the summer detailing plans for the upcoming celebration.

International Bowling News Four-time Irish Champion Paul Magee dies

05/07/08

Long-time Irish national team member Paul Magee has died at the age of only 51 after a long battle with motor neuron disease. Paul was a member of the Irish national team from 1978 until 2001 and a four-time Irish national champion.

He played in many World Cups, in World and European Championships before he became Irish team manager until 2003.

"Paul would be known to bowlers far and wide across Europe and the world," said Darryl Eagen, a friend and team mate on Team Ireland. "I am sure there are people who don't know of his death and would wish to pay there respects. Paul was a man who lit up the world of bowling with his personality. His victory banquet sing-alongs were legendary."

This is definitely true as numerous World Cup participants as well as we will testify.

"Paul will be sadly missed by all bowlers who had the pleasure of knowing him," Eagen added. "May he rest in peace."
